This paper deals with aspects of modernization in Arabic which acquired prominence during the first half of this century as new demands were placed on the language by political and educational considerations. The discussion revolves around the motivation behind various proposals which aimed at orthographical reform, grammar simplification, and vocabulary development. Proposed reforms are outlined and evaluated in terms of their prospect for success within the Arabic sociolinguistic context.
