Isi artikel
Pidgin languages are usually described as spoken languages, but a diary and letters written by Efik traders in Old Calabar in the 18th century indicate that when writing needs develop within the community the pidgin may be used for these functions. This pidgin was used for record keeping within the community and for correspondence. Although those who use a pidgin language have a native language, this language may not be adequate for new uses that arise, such as writing. Definitions of pidgins should be expanded to include the possibility of both written and spoken functions of the language.
