The Bantu languages of Africa include many which retain the reconstructed seven-vowel contrast. Finding a practical transcription system is difficult --special symbols and diacritics are hard to type, and the latter interfere with tone marking. A system is proposed which requires no special symbols, handles all necessary contrasts, and uses no symbol groups larger than the trigraphs currently used in many orthographies.
