Isi artikelAfter a survey of previous research (1-3), the view is rejected that the PIE kinship terminology belongs to the Omaha type (4). Rather, it seems to have closer relations to Murdock's (1949) descriptive type (5.1); the avunculus-nepos problem can be resolved without relying on the Omaha model (5.2). Concerning affines, it is shown that PIE *suekuros/suekrus designate the parents-in-law on both sides (6); so there exists no contradiction between linguistic evidence and anthropological expectations.
