Isi artikel
This paper explores Korean color terms as a semantic field and discusses their related phenomena. Taking issue with Berlin and Kay's (1969) contention that Korean color terms are at Stage VII (composed of eleven color terms: hayahta, kkamahta, ppalkahta, phalahta, nolahta, chengsayk, kalsayk, casayk, punhongsayk, tungsayk, hoysayk), this paper instead argues that they are at Stage IV (composed of only five color terms: hayahta, kkamahta, ppalkahta, phalahta, nolahta). To support this claim, three pieces of evidence are discussed: (1) the inflected nature of the indigenous Korean words, (2) the presence of the five Chinese loans (replacing the native ones), and (3) the grue phenomenon. In addition, this paper addresses two kinds of phonetic symbolism, bearing crucially on reconstructed basic Korean color words (i.e., vowel and consonant alternation). Finally, this paper casts doubt on the viability of positive correlations between color vocabulary size and culture complexity proposed by Berlin and Kay, showing that the expandability of basic Korean color terms heavily rests on the application of certain morphological rules.
