Isi artikel
Analyses of bilingualism tend to operate on the assumption that boundaries between codes are as unambiguous in practice as they are in the abstract. But language in practice can confound such boundaries in subtle ways. Using material from my work in a Puerto Rican New York bilingual speech community, I suggest that (a) the bilinguals' English has become formally integrated with English in two ways that are not immediately obvious, and (b) this reflects the development of a systemic continuity between English and Spanish, the diagnostic of which is the pragmatics of code-switching.
