Isi artikelMeaning in pidgin languages is heavily dependent on extralinguistic factors, one of the most important being the immediate physical and social context of the utterance. Considerable difficulty is therefore experienced when trying to achieve a satisfactory interpretation of a text that is distant not only in space but in time. The translator must use every possible means of discovering the details of the social, geographical and historical background of the document in order to resolve ambiguities both lexical and structural. A letter written over a century ago in Chinook Jargon is examined in detail as a case in point.
