The American game of professional baseball is presented as an ethnographic domain to test, in particular, the usefulness of componential analysis (CA) to discover and describe the semantic features necessary to satisfactorily account for the game. In so doing several general ethnographic procedures are pursued and applied, especially to the domain of base-stealing. The semantic analysis of baseball is also evaluated in terms of general criteria proposed by Sternberg 1983.
