Isi artikelFuturistic visions of 21stst century life routinely depicted civilizations transformedby pills-for-meals, networkedby air corridored, mass transit systems, andgovernedby mega-corporations.Within such sci-fi logic, the preeminence of the nation as we know it was absent—even alien. Science fiction, in these cases, offereda diagnostic of the excesses of modern nationalism and/or corporate capitalism. As we edge our way into the new millennium, it seems an appropriate time to acknowledge the striking endurance of the nonfuturistic modes of being. For, today, when the political andeconomic sovereignty of nation-states is apparently andincreas -ingly counteredby an array of “national andsupranational organisms under a single logic of rule” (Hardt & Negri, 2000, p. xii), the “nation” remains a virulent force in everyday lived experience. Witness the overwhelming “national” call forth to advance the agenda of “9/11 America” (its fallout still very much in process) andthe familiar andread y place of sport in that instantiation.
