Isi artikelI examine the origins of East African Nubi, an Arabic creole of Uganda and Kenya, concentrating on its Arabic origin, which constitutes its greatest lexical, grammatical and phonological source. Nubi exhibits the greatest degree of affinity with the Arabic dialects of the western Sudan (Nigeria, Chad, western Sudan). There are only two strikingly innovative I aspects of Nubi: loss of gemination with its consequences on syllable structure, and a great reduction in inflectional structure. Finally, the status of Nubi as a creole language is considered.
