When Annika Sorenstam accepted an invitation to play in the 2003 PGA Colonial Tournament, echoes of Bobby Riggs versus Billie Jean King were stirred for the masses as people tuned in to see if Sorenstam had what it took to compete with men professional golfers (McCabe, 2003). While Sorenstam argued that playing with the men was about becoming a better golfer (McCabe, 2003), she also said she did not expect the whirlwind of controversy that accompanied the decision (Dolch, 2003). The result was media pandemonium; Sorenstam missed the cut by four strokes; however, her quest to compete sent USA network ratings to record-breaking levels, as an average of three million viewers watched the weekday coverage (Boyd, 2004).
