Isi artikel
For Bamana, developing speech competence is related to a young man's participation during adolescence in kote-tlon, an indigenous drama based on farce and satire which exploits a wide range of oral and non-oral media in addition to speech. Field research reveals that the importance of theater for acquiring speech competence is related to the Bamana's conception of "shame" and the efficacious power set in motion by communication. Managing shame and power in the theater gives the males an understanding of how speech may either construct or destroy social relations.
