Berlin and Kay's justifications for their widely discussed notion "basic color term" are explored. It is argued that Berlin and Kay's criteria for defining basic color term pose insoluable problems for scholars trying to apply their model. A new definition of the basic color term concept is proposed in order to eliminate contradictory and ambiguous criteria.
