Color vocabulary and color naming tests were carried out with Japanese children in Yonezawa (Yamagata Prefecture), Tokyo and DUsseldorf (FRG). In addition to the fundamental differences of Japanese in the psycholinguistics of color naming (Zollinger 1973, 1976), specific influences of the European surroundings were found in DUsseldorf and, to a certain extent, in Tokyo. The salience of words for "derived" colors (Kay and McDaniel 1978) increases in the order Yonezawa + Tokyo + DUsseldorf, except for pink, a foreign word used in Japanese, but for which no commonly used equivalent exists in German.
