Isi artikelWith data collected over a period of two years in a modern version of the Southern "county farm" system in penology, a general ethnography of prison language is developed. With statistical demonstration of the common, underlying premise, reference is made to the functions of prison language socially, psychologically, and politically. The ethnography is examined under the scrutiny of prison reform efforts, finally alluding to an understanding of why these efforts have not been effective.
