Isi artikelNo matter where or with whom conflict develops, Iranians do not necessarily follow the same rules of conflict management as prescribed by Western standards. Consequently, the media coverage of events in Iran since 1979 has propagated the erroneous impression that Iranians act irrationally in their management of conflict. Although idiosyncratic behaviors are manifested by Iranians, for the most part, they tend to follow mutually agreed upon rules for bluffs, cessation of communication (ghahr), intermediaries, and reconciliation rituals (ashti) in managing conflict. The Iranian style of conflict management, at least by Iranian standards, is neither bewildering nor incoherent.
