Isi artikel
When I made my literary debut in Japan sixteen years ago with Seijoki no kikoenai heya (A Room Where the Star-Spangled Banner Cannot Be Heard;1992), one of the things that thrilled me the most was the telephone call I got from the Japanese-born ethnic Korean writer Lee Yangji. What an interesting turn of fate that sixteen years after hearing those words of encouragement from a writer of Korean background who had preceded me, I, an American-born writer, should be congratulating an up-an-coming Chinese novelist on winning the Akutagawa Prize. In this year of the Beijing Olympics, it seems like yet another passing of the torch here in Tokyo.
