This paper examines the fate of a variety of the Albanian language spoken in Greece, locally known as Arvanitika. The paper first introduces information on current research progress in the area of language death. It then discusses the Arvanitika sociohistorical and sociocultural background, attitudes, and language and repertoire changes. It concludes with a plea for the study of language obsolescence in the frame of the ethnography of speaking and in a tradition of reconstructing earlier functions of linguistic resources on the basis of narrative considerations.
