Isi artikel
Among the more remarkable achievements of the Classic Maya civilization in southern Mexico was its complex and accurate calendrical system, with attendant sophistication in mathematics, astronomy, and measurement. In addition, Maya cosmology, divination, and rulership were bound inextricably to the calendar and its elaboration, one aspect of which is a set of 20 day names. The linguistic, symbolic, and ritual meanings associated with these day names are explored here in order to demonstrate that the set of 20 names can be divided into two decimal subsets based on oppositional pairing.
