Isi artikel
The Semitic root *?il-, generally translated as god in the various languages, has been shown to have meant ancestor or tutelary deceased elder in the early Biblical period. The usages in the Biblical text of another term, Hebrew ?eli:li:rn, are examined here. It is concluded that this word is a reduplicated form of the same root and that it referred to ancestor images during much of the Biblical period.
