Isi artikel
This paper compiles data from 127 globally distributed languages which attest to cross-language uniformities in the lexical encoding and naming of the four cardinal directions. Languages tend to encode cardinal directions when the domain as a whole acquires cultural salience. In addition, there is a typical order in which cardinal direction terms are added to vocabularies. This encoding sequence is explained by reference to the differential natural salience of cardinal points.
