Isi artikelOne genre of Jaqi stories depict jaqi (people, native speakers of Aymara,Jaqaru, or Kawki) being victimized by gentiles (evil ones who live in the old ruins). An analysis of the various elements shows the gentile stories to be simultaneously an effect of and a means of coping with European domination. Nevertheless, a heavy price in loss of history is paid. As an example of contact literature --the artistic play with language to cope with attack on self and culture --the gentile stories prove a fascinating study.
