Isi artikel
The Classic Maya site of Palenque was abandoned long before the Spanish Conquest, so its original Maya name is unknown. Several suggestions concerning the Maya name for this ceremonial center have been made, one of which is explored here regarding possible Mixe-Zoquean involvement. In addition, linguistic field research among Mayans of Chiapas has produced a Tzel tal name for the site, along with some ethnographic information consonant with speculations that Palenque was at one time either a necropolis or in some other way associated with bones and death.
