Isi artikel
In this paper, I examine the arguments advanced to support an analysis of spirantization over stop-formation and the assumptions underlying them. In the course of this examination I show that stop-formation is not an unusual process and that for two alternations that have been analyzed as spi- rantization (one of them the classic Spanish alternation), the stop-formation analysis is preferable. I then briefly consider the effects of judging spirantization as, a priori, better than stop-formation and the question of why stop-formation is stigmatized as bizarre.
