Isi artikel
The Kanchanaburi Demographic Surveillance System (KDSS) monitors population change in Thailand's Kanchanaburi Province. KDSS was established with a cross-sectional scheme for data collection and manipulation. This original database needed to be transformed into a longitudinal scheme in order to archieve productive data utilization as the original KDSS data structure was a "flat file" in SPSS format and was diffucult to manage and manipulate. Three main problems with the original database were identified. First, the linkage between the various data sets required excessive human resources. Second, some data were missing as a result of individuals moving from one study area to another during consecutive years. Last, but not least, a number of data retrievals were inconsistent because the data capture was employed separately on the survey of the previous year. The new system is operated using a relational database management system, which is data redundancy, unreliability and inconsistency. hence, teh human resources needed for data retrieval are reduced, data quality is improved and data confidentiality is strengthened.
