Isi artikelNearly every review of the “what works” literature in criminology concludes with an appeal for an increase in rigorous evaluation studies, preferably randomized experiments. Unfortunately, although the number of criminological experiments reported in the literature continues to increase (at least through the mid-1990s), they are still relatively rare when compared to all evaluation studies. I once attended a seminar (about the paucity of experiments in education) in which Mark Moore of theKennedy School of Government said that if there were similar problems in business and industry, the top executives would bring in the company engineers and production managers to understand why and solve the problem.
