There is consensus among clinicians who provide or evaluate treatment for substance abusers that addiction is often a chronic condition, characterized by cycles of increasingly heavy use, treatment, abstinence, and eventual relapse (Anglin, Hser, and Grella 1997). McLellan et al. (2000), for example, have argued that addiction shares many of the essential features of other chronic diseases such as asthma, hypertension, depression, and diabetes. In fact, researchers and clinicians have espoused this notion for many years (cf. Nurco et al. 1975; Vaillant 1988).
