It is not always uncomplicated to translate collocations because of arbitrariness vs restrictions across languages. This qualitative study is aimed at finding out whether the Indonesian translations reveal the intended meanings of the English collocations in the English guide book: Don't Sweat the Small Stuff for Women-Simple and Practical Ways to Do What Matters Most and Find time for Youl by investigating the types of the English collocations in the guide book, the translation techniques employed by the Indonesian translator to translate the English collocations, and the extent to which the translations of the English collocations are adequate in terms of accuracy, naturalness and clarity. Ten examples that describe each type of collocations were selected randomly to be the corpus of the study, which were then matched to their translations, and analyzed. The analysis of the accuracy and techniques of translations were conducted by the writer, whereas the analysis of naturalness and clarity of the sentences in which the collocations appeared were done by three evaluators. There were five types of the English collocations identified, and four types of the deviations of collocations, called the anomalous collocations. There were eight techniques used in translating the English collocations. Out of ninety translations, sixty-eight, or 75.6 per cent translations were considered accurate; and twenty-two, or 24.4 per cent were inaccurate. The level of the unnaturalness and unclarity of the sentences varied among raters. |
