In this paper, the convenience to applied well-known simulation tools with block-oriented as well as objectoriented properties for simulating thermal desalination plants are analyzed. Relevant characteristics of these tools are highlighted. A model for the brine heater of a multi- stage flashing (MSF) plant is presented. This model is implemented in a block-oriented fashion as well as in an object-oriented form. This allows developing the model modularly in steps so that in the future models for desalination plants can be configured, modified, expanded more easily. Simulation and control results had shown the viability to use this approach for modeling MSF plants
