Isi artikelSince the inception of Research on Social Work Practice in 1991, the journal has eschewed reviewing and publishing methodological articles in favor of focusing on outcome studies, systematic reviews, and reports on the development and testing of outcome measures. Recently, however, two little books have been brought to my attention and have stimulated a reappraisal of this policy. These two masterpieces are titled Users’ Guides to the Medical Literature (Guyatt & Rennie, 2002) and Bandolier’s Little Book of Making Sense of the Medical Literature (Moore & McQuay, 2006). The first volume consists of 25 brief methodological articles reprinted and edited, originally appearing in the Journal of American Medical Association, beginning in 1993 and continuing through 2000, authored by many of the originators of the concept of evidence-based practice (EBP). Indeed, these articles may be said to constitute the “core” of EBP. The topics of both volumes varied widely but had in common the aim of providing practitioners with concise, relatively easy-to-understand summaries of important topics related to the methodology of intervention research. While medical research has its own domain, these research methodologies have applicability to many disciplines, hence the widespread extrapolation of EBP to many other fields in the human services, including social work.
