A new vertical homing guidance law for sea skimming missiles to avoid ditching is proposed in this paper. This guidance law is specially effective in case that the height rate at the homing guidance starting point is negative. It is derived based on the solution of an optimal control problem not only considering a control energy cost but also considering a low altitude flight penalty. A simplifie autopilot dynamics are taken into account in the formulation of the problem to cope with the time delay effects affecting the ditching performances. Simulation results show that effective non-ditching performances as well as homing performances can be obtained by means of the proposed method.
