This paper presents the optimal evasion problem for typical sea skimming ASM (anti-ship missile) to enhance its survivability against CIWS (close in weapon system). A simple model to describe the ASM-CIWS engagement situation is proposed. And, by introducing a cost function including CIWS aiming errors, an optimal control problem for the optimal evasion is formulated. Since conventional solution techniques are not suitable for the problem, a hypothesis generation/test method is proposed. Two hypothesis-pruning techniques are also suggested because the number of hypotheses increases exponentially as the time step propagates. A solution example shows that the bang-bang type control is most effective for evading the CIWS.
