Student's Competence in Translating Lexical Ambiguities

This croos-sectional study investigated whether university students developed their basic translation competence from the lower to the upper semester and whether primary meanings were better acquired than secondary meanings. The subjects were Widya Mandala University students: 48 of the second semester; 47 of the fourth semester and 36 of the sixth semester. They might be furhter classified into above average and below average takers of the placement test. They had to translate 60 English sentences into Indonesia. These 60 sentences consisted of 30 pairs and in each pair these was a multi-sense word that had to be translated into two different Indonesian words because of the different sentential context, e.g. "table" into meja (primary meaning) or tabel (secondary meaning). The Indonesian words were judged as either accurate or inaccurate. The findings indicate the follwoing points. First, the above-average students scored higher than below-average students did at all semesters. The scores show development: the higher the semester, the higher the score. Second, below-average students showed questionable development because the fourth semester students scored lower than the below-average second-semester students. Third, primary meanings were better acquired by all the students.
