Combining the time-domain and the frequency-domain methods this paper proposes a novel identification algorithm, called the empirical frequency-domain optimal parameter (EFOP) estimate, to investigate the common linear stochastic systems with noise interference. First, this paper introduces the general prediction error criterion in the time-domain estimate. By minimizing the frequency-domain estimate some general prediction error criteria are constructed for the ARMA models. Next, the parameter estimation is obtained by minimizing the general prediction error criterion. This method theoretically provides the globally optimum frequency-domain estimate of the model. It has advantages in the anti-disturbance performance and can precisely identify the model with fewer sample numbers. Finally, some simulation examples are included to illustrate the new method.
