This pilot study on the acquisition of new comprehension schema for expository prose by the transfer of narrative schema is based on recent research in reading comprehension. This research has indicated that a reader’s schema for a discourse structure provides a kind of pattern which aids in both comprehension and retention of information from a passage. In this study ESL readers transferred and applied their knowledge of narrative structure in the comprehension and retention of information from previously unfamiliar discourse, expository prose. They tended to recall the expository material in a written form similar to narrative. Thus, transferring competence from narrative to expository prose was accomplished primarily by schema assimilation or schema accommodation. There were no effects of transfer of narrative schema for ESL students who were familiar with expository writing. However, these students tended to interact with the text by elaboration on the expository form in their written recall. This interaction with the text provided by their schema for expository prose resulted in comprehension and retention of more information from the expository passage than recalled by the group who transferred narrative schema.
