Isi artikelBesides producing food and fibre as marketable products, agriculture also generates various intangible products, called multi-functionality of agriculture including flood mitigation, soil erosion control, water resource conservation, carbon sequestration, waste disposal, and biodiversity conservation functions. To date, multi-functionality of agriculture has not been recognized or otherwise neglected as indicated by the acceleration of agricultural land conversion, especially paddy fields, to non agricultural uses. The high capacity of paddy fields to retain rainwater and filter sediments is very important in mitigating flood risk in the downstream areas. Data indicate that flood intensity increase in the area where agricultural lands have been converted to non agricultural purposes. This paper summarizes the case study of community’s willingness to participate in sustaining agricultural multi-functionality. Survey was conducted in the downstream area of Kaligarang watershed, Central Java. About 67 people who live in the flood area, in Semarang city were interviewed in relation to their knowledge on agricultural multifunctionality, flooding experiences, and willingness to pay (WTP) for sustaining agricultural multi-functionality. Although the amount of WTP was relatively small, i.e. ranged from 1% to 4 % of the household income, about 78% of the respondents were willing to contribute for flood mitigation as one of an agricultural multi-functionality.
