Isi artikel
Azotobacter is one of soil bacteria which has been widely used as biofertilizer in sustainable agriculture. The objective of Azotobacter application is increasing the plant growth because this bacteria can fix N2 and produce phytohormones. On the other hand, Azotobacter produce exopolisaccharide which has the role in enhancing the availability of soil heavy metal so that its accumulation in parts of plant would increase. The objective of this experiment was to verify the effect of Azotobacter inoculation on cadmium (Cd) accumulation in lettuce leaves grown in soil containing Cd. The results confirmed that Azotobacter could induce Cd accumulation in lettuce leaves. Since Cd is a very toxic heavy metal, this harmful effect of using Azotobacter as biofertilizer could raise food safety and human health problem, especially when this biofertilizer is applied in soil with relative high amount of Cd.
