Objective: To assess the functional status of stroke survivors at hospital discharge. Subjects and method: The data are obtained from medical records of stroke patients from August to December 2007. There were medical records with the ICD X code 164 and 1 61.9. We randomly selected 40 medical records for further evaluation. The sampling method was consecutive sampling technique. The data were analysis descriptively and analytically using the statistical package program. The functional status mainly compared between the initial status and the functional status at hospital discharge. Results: There were 399 stroke patients during the observation period. The patients consist of 288 non hemorrhagic strokes and 111 hemorrhagic strokes. There were 172 male and 116 female patients in the non hemorrhagic group. The highest proportion of the patients has age range from 45 to 64 years old. The measurement of functional status is part of routine management of stroke patients in our hospital. The further analysis of 40 patients showed that there was significantly increase (p<0,05) in functional status between the initial measurement and hospital discharge. Patients with left side weakness have better functional outcome. Most patients are in mild disability at hospital discharge. Conclusion: The functional status of stroke survivors at hospital discharge are significantly increase compared with the initial status.
