The notion of a characteristic subspace of a system is introduced to describe the information structure of a decentralized control system. Certain well-known results on decentralized control are described and treated in a completely new way. The new treatment dramatically simplifies the proofs of these results. New criteria for reconfiguration conditions for information structure of decentralized systems are given and proved by means of the characteristic subspace of the system.
