Four reactors of different proportion and size of media composed of charcoal and gravel were set up without vegetation. The media consist of gravel, a mixture of gravel and charcoal powder in 2:1 ratio, a mixture of gravel and granular charcoal in 2:1 ratio, and a mixture of gravel and granular charcoal in 1:1 ratio were used to fill up the constructed wetland units (Reactors) I, II, III and IV, respectively. Sample of untreated landfill leachate collected from landfill site of Pulau Burung, Pulau Pinang, was introduced into the reactors. The Total Dissolve Solids (TDS), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Iron, and Lead of inlet and outlet from four reactors were analyzed by standard methods. The results show that TSS removal at the outlet tap were in average 6.04, 35.27, 44.28, and 53.65 %, while at the outlet overflow were in average 23.00, 40.90, 21.50, and 60.10 % for Reactor I, II, III, and IV, respectively. On the contrary, all reactors exhibited higher TDS value at outlet as compared to the inlet. The percentage of iron and lead removal were in average, 51.50, 72.40, 63.70, 59.30 % and 2.80, 19.40, 13.00, 16.10 % for Reactor I, II, III, and IV, respectively. The highest treatment efficiency for both metals was observed in Reactor II. The results of statistical analysis concluded that the variability of LEAD apparently was influenced by the media, otherwise the media was not the dominant factor that influenced the variability of IRON.
