Application of a frequency to voltage converter (FVC) along with a constant gain in feedforward path although reduces the steady state error in an ordinary phase locked loop (PLL), it however does not result in a zeroth order PLL. To obtain a zeroth order PLL, the feedforward gain should be adjusted in accordance to the gain of the voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). Since VCO gain depends nonlinearly to its output frequency (or input voltage), the zeroth order PLL can only be obtained by adding a frequency dependent feedforward gain. This however is difficult in practical implementation. To further improve the performance of a PLL we propose to employ another FVC in feedback pass around VCO. This reduces effect of the nonlinearity in VCO gain and improves PLL response much better than the first FVC. Analysis of the stability for the new PLL is performed to get the appropriate gains and filter parameters.
