Yet, despite the compelling nature of the raw experience that consciousness does cause behavior, the counterintuitive question “[Yes but] Does consciousness [really] cause behavior?” is by no means a new one.William James spends a whole chapter of his classic The Principles of Psychology (1890) arguing against what he calls “the automaton theory” of Thomas Huxley, who had earlier compared mental events to a steam whistle that contributes nothing to the work of a locomotive (Huxley 1874). Many of the intelligentsia of Victorian England ignored the colonial James and continued to support Huxley’s notion that humans are indeed nothing more than “conscious automata.” This idea was elaborated further by Sigmund Freud, who famously suggested that much of our everyday behavior is not even acknowledged, let alone caused, by consciousness (Freud 1954). Freud’s work may be now largely discredited as science, but this has not prevented its exerting a remarkable influence on all aspects of Western culture. Apparently the idea that consciousness does not cause our voluntary behavior is not quite as counterintuitive and aversive as it may at first appear.
