This paper addresses the time-optimal control problem of flexible slewing structures. Different from previous methods, in which one needs to solve a set of differential equations, genetic algorithms (GAs) is to be used. The first step is to transform the solution of time-optimal control problem into a proper code of chromosome in GAs and to define a fitness function that can handle constraints while reducing traveling time. In order to speed up the convergent rate of GAs, the simple GAs is modified by techniques of real number encoding, arithmetical crossover, nonuniform mutation, dynamic rate of mutation and crossover, enlarged sampling space, ranking mechanism, gene-immigration and gene-extinction. To show the feasibility of the proposed method, simulation is included for illustration.
