This paper is a preliminary, auditory study of the tones of the Pakse Dialect of Southern Laos, based on the speech of two native speakers of Pakse Dialect. The study shows that there are six contrastive tones on smooth syllables, four on checked syllables. The paper also discusses the tonal distribution pattern and compares it with the other works done
