Isi artikelPrevious studies of Nigerian English have concentrated mainly on vocabulary items claimed to be peculiar to Nigerian usage. Data presented here suggest the need to adopt a polylectal approach in order to provide a thorough sructural/functional description of the phenomenon of English language usage in Nigeria. nules explaining the relationship between Universal English and several varieties of English used in the Nigerian speech continuum are discussed. Finally, some socio-cultural constraints governing acceptability are considered
