In February, 2006, an 18-month-old Aboriginal girl, presented to Tennant Creek Hospital (20 bed unit; 510 km from Alice Springs) with gastroenteritis. She was severely dehydrated, hypokalaemic (1·2 mmol/L), and hyponatraemic (115 mmol/L). She was fluid resuscitated before being transferred to us at Alice Springs Hospital via aeromedical service.
