Isi artikel
This analysis of the deictic system of the Tobelorese language (of Halmahera Island,Indonesia) illustrates the ways in which three axes of orientation pervade Tobelorese speech, indicating the positions of subjects of discourse and the directionality of their motion. The three axes ("landward" versus "seaward," "upward" versus "downward," and "this direction" versus "that direction") are expressed by means of demonstrative and locative pronominals, enclitics attached to noun phrases, and suffixes attached to verbs.
