It has long been established that many common diseases are the result of interactions between genetic susceptibility and environmental exposure. The identification of genetic variants that underlie susceptibility to diseases and alter the expression or function of proteins (either familiar or novel) can implicate the protein in question in the pathogenesis of the disease. This not only increases the understanding of disease pathophysiology but also can lead to the development of new therapeutic agents.
