There has been a wealth of literature on performance measurement and evaluation in academic libraries over the last 30 years, both in the US and the UK. More recently, writers have turned their attention to the specific task of measuring learning, teaching and research outcomes. This is perceived by practitioners as a useful way to measure the impact of a library/information service on its users, whether students, teaching staff or researchers. However, the practical means of achieving such assessment are by no means clear, and, while practitioners would like a straightforward system which enables them to prove the value of their service to their institutional directors and peers, those in this research field who are trying to devise appropriate systems find it difficult to produce ‘catch-all’ or ‘foolproof’ measures. This article draws on recent writing from a number of countries as well as from data gathered in the HEFCE-funded eVALUEd project (which is seeking to produce a toolkit for evaluating electronic information services in UK academic libraries) in order to show how the academic sector is now moving towards developing workable methods for assessing outcomes in this field.
