The best way to ensure the results of library and information science (LIS) research has been debated for many years with difficulties arising even as to what should be included as ‘research’. Since the LIS profession is vocational in nature, it is only natural that much of the research undertaken is to improve practice and develop innovative service delivery methods for the benefit of users, while the more speculative (‘blue skies’) research tends to take second place. As there is a focus on the more practical side of LIS research, it tends to be thought that the results of research carried out by academics in library and information studies departments has little impact on practice, and this may be due to poor channels of communication in disseminating those research results. Since the LIS profession is one that focuses on people, it is only reasonable to find that research projects tend to be aimed at solving the day-to-day and more long-term strategic issues and problems facing LIS professionals and their work. Similarly, the fact that researchers are able to see the actual impact that their research can have on the development of policies, programmes and services is very rewarding for academics and is one of the main drivers for such research. This close proximity of research and practice is conducive to academics being able to use their research experience to enliven their teaching. One of the main drivers of LIS research is the widespread tendency for it to be conducted on a co-operative partnership basis, and this fact alone makes the research process one that enriches the organizations in which the research is undertaken.
